{Studio Living} Lessons

July 6th, 2013 § 1 comment

The Huffington Post recently posted this hilarious list of the 9 important lessons we were taught by Holly Golightly’s awesome bachelorette pad in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.  Highlights from the list included gems like – You don’t need a real couch. Improvise with anything that provides basic seating … like a sawed-off bathtub – and –  Accessorize fearlessly. If you want to have a weathervane next to your entryway, DO IT.

They kid – but you guys, having a tiny apartment in NYC has taught me very similar things!

In my basement-level studio apartment – which I share with my best friend – the seating is as basic as it gets: two beds! Cozy, right?  This works out okay {I tend to eat in bed even when a table is an option} but I’ll admit it does get silly when you have 6 people over for beers all at once.  And while I may not have a weathervane, I do have a dress mannequin on display which has the sole purpose of showing off my favorite outfits.

Since signing a lease and moving into this little space on May 1st, I’ve slowly been turning my apartment into a home. I’ve avoided Ikea, Target, etc. so far, limiting my home decor shopping to flea markets, thrift shops, and the street.  Space is so limited in NYC {and no one has a car to take their belongings to Goodwill} so when people want to get rid of something they just leave it by the curb.  This is sometimes gross {bedbug ridden mattresses I’m talking to you} but sometimes awesome {hello bookshelves, side table, and dress rack!}.  Our glassware and dishes are from Housing Works {a thrift store whose mission is to end the dual crises of homelessness and AIDS} and our beds and frames were inherited from friends.

Curating a new home in a new city is a slow process, but it’s one that I’ve loved every moment of.  It’s so exciting to find just the right thing – and bonus points if it’s cheap or free! I’ll share a full tour of my home veeery soon, but for now I just wanted to give you a little Instagram peek {above} and share my thoughts on the process.

Have a happy weekend loves! {I’ll see you at the flea market!}

xoxo
