Ladder Bookshelf {DIY}

I’ve mentioned before that our New York apartment is teeny-tiny {but, I walk to work, sooo worth it}, and I’ve honestly had a lot of fun decorating. It’s been an interesting journey to find new ways to save space, add a dash of chicness, and still have furniture that’s practical in our small home.

I found this ladder over the summer on the street, after someone in my neighborhood put it out with the trash. My brother carried it home for me, and I instantly put it to work as a space-saving bookshelf.  I loved the idea – but the wood was a bit bland in color and dirty from use. So I invested some of my tip $$ towards buying a small, bright pot of paint, and went to work.  Here’s what it looked like before:

I used the brightest yellow paint I could find {some good options can be found here and here}. I also chose a semi-gloss finish so it would be easy wipe down and keep clean. I painted two coats with just a small paint brush {it was very therapeutic!}, and allowed it to dry for a few hours in between coats and then overnight before setting it up.

I love the way it turned out!! It adds just the right pop of color to our small space, and gives the room a cheery warmth.  I’m not usually a bright yellow kind of gal, but I went with my gut and I couldn’t be happier with the result.

To try this at home, you could find a ladder at a second hand shop, hardware store, or online {this ladder for example could be taken apart to make two bookshelves, or you could add wood planks and turn it sideways for a larger space}. The possibilities are endless!

So, what do you think loves: would you use a ladder for a bookshelf? And, if so, what color would you paint it?!
